Yes! and he became a very good PGA2000 course designer on the architect.

When Gene Sarazen invented the sand wedge before the 1932 British Open, he kept the club hidden in his bag for fear it would be ruled illegal. After Sarazen won the event, it was too late to outlaw the club.
