British Isles Golf Course
Hole 1 – Royal Portrush (Dunluce)
The Dunluce course at Royal Portrush, County Antrim is the only course from Ireland to have staged the Open Championship, in 1951, a tournament won that year by Max Faulkner. The 1st hole is a formidable opener and runs uphill, rising steeply to a large green. In real life the green has a large slope on it but in my re-creation I took the bulk of the slop away and instead added a bunker in the centre of the fairway some 240 yards from the tee. Out of bounds run along both sides of the fairway and there are two huge bunkers on the left side. At 388 yards from the back tees this is not a long hole, but with the uphill contours it plays closer to 420 yards and as such is a belter of an opening hole. |
